{"id":146,"date":"2020-06-21T12:51:13","date_gmt":"2020-06-21T12:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/justcruisin4wdtours.com.au\/?page_id=146"},"modified":"2025-04-24T23:34:52","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T23:34:52","slug":"11-day-tour-flinders-ranges-arkaroola-lake-eyre-coober-pedy-and-andamooka","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/justcruisin4wdtours.com.au\/?page_id=146","title":{"rendered":"11 day Flinders Ranges, Arkaroola, Lake Eyre, Coober Pedy and Andamooka Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">11 day Flinders Ranges, Arkaroola, Lake Eyre, Coober Pedy and Andamooka Tour<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>DAY 1: Depart Adelaide 7:00am for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilpenapound.com.au\/?utm_medium=paidsearch&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_campaign=wp-seasonalcampaign&amp;utm_content=aq&amp;utm_term=230419-wp-seasonalcampaign&amp;gad_source=1\">Wilpena Pound Resort <\/a>via the crossroads of Australia &#8211; Port Pirie, Port Germein and Port Augusta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After lunch we head towards <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilpena_Pound\">Wilpena Pound<\/a> via Quorn and Hawker and from Hawker we visit Kanyaka ruins.We will spend the night&nbsp;at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilpenapound.com.au\/\">Wilpena Pound Resort<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DAY 2:&nbsp;<\/strong>After breakfast we take a peaceful bushwalk to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com.au\/Attraction_Review-g1231992-d7370911-Reviews-Wangara_Lookout-Wilpena_Flinders_Ranges_South_Australia.html\">Wangarra Lookouts<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walkingsa.org.au\/walk\/find-a-place-to-walk\/hills-homestead-walk\/\">Hill Homestead<\/a>.We then travel the geological trail through the&nbsp;Brachina Gorge (<em>depending on road conditions and access<\/em>).&nbsp;This gorge traces the geological history of the area for hundreds of million years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our next stop is the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.prairiehotel.com.au\/\">Prairie Hotel at Parachilna<\/a> where we taste some real Aussie tucker. After lunch we head towards <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilpena_Pound\">Wilpena Pound<\/a> via Parachilna Gorge and Blinman. We will spend another night&nbsp;at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilpenapound.com.au\/\">Wilpena Pound Resort<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DAY 3<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>and 4<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong>Today we depart Wilpena Resort for Arkaroola&nbsp;via Wirrealpa, Wearing Gorge, and Balcanoona arriving at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arkaroola.com.au\/\">Arkaroola Wilderness Resort<\/a> for lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While in Arkaroola we can join the heart pumping&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arkaroola.com.au\/ridgetop-tour-2\/\">world famous Ridge Top tour<\/a>, the ultimate 4wd experience across the steep ridges of the ancient Flinders Ranges. (Optional tour)&nbsp;We stay overnight Arkaroola Wilderness Resort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>DAY&nbsp;<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>5:&nbsp;<\/u><\/strong>Today we make our way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.williamcreekhotel.com\/\">William Creek Hotel<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oodnadatta_Track\">Oodnadatta Track<\/a>.&nbsp;William Creek Hotel is&nbsp;the&nbsp;world\u2019s most isolated pub&nbsp;and when we stop here you can indulge in a well-deserved&nbsp;Australian beer. The most important claim to fame for William Creek is that it is the smallest town in Australia and is located on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anna_Creek_Station\">Anna Creek Station<\/a>, the world\u2019s largest cattle station at 32,500 square kilometres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a land of contrasts. There\u2019s red gibber plains stretching to the horizon, mound springs (we visit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofmoundsprings.org.au\/featured-mound\/bubbler-and-blanche-cup\/\">Bubbler Springs and Blanche Cup Springs<\/a>) which create bush oases and wetlands, red gum lined creeks and vast areas of grey salt bush and spiky spinifex.&nbsp;Remnants of the old Ghan Railway&nbsp;are abundant along the Oodnadatta Track.&nbsp;We stay overnight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.williamcreekhotel.com\/\">William Creek Hotel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DAY 6:&nbsp;<\/strong>After breakfast we can take an optional 1 hour flight over Lake Eyre North. Lake Eyre North which covers 8430 square kilometres, is 144 kilometres long and 77 kilometres wide is by far the larger of the two lakes. The creek like Goyder Channel joins Lake Eyre South to Lake Eyre North, which at its narrowest is only 150 metres wide. The lakes lowest point is 15.2 metres below sea level and drains more than one sixth of the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From here we head <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooberpedy.com\/\">Coober Pedy<\/a>. In the heart of South Australia\u2019s vast outback,&nbsp;it is an&nbsp;opal wonderland. We spend some time visiting mines and interpretive centres which a great insight into the town and its mining operations. There are more than 30 opal shops in Coober Pedy if you would like to purchase some opal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overnight we stay in underground accommodation at <a href=\"https:\/\/theundergroundmotel.com.au\/\">The Underground Motel<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooberpedyexperience.com.au\/\">Experience Motel accommodation<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/justcruisin4wdtours.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/IMG_20190706_163432_619-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/justcruisin4wdtours.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/IMG_20190706_163432_619-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/justcruisin4wdtours.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/IMG_20190706_163432_619-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/justcruisin4wdtours.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/IMG_20190706_163432_619-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/justcruisin4wdtours.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/IMG_20190706_163432_619-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/justcruisin4wdtours.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/IMG_20190706_163432_619.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DAY&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>7<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong>Today we visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parks.sa.gov.au\/find-a-park\/Browse_by_region\/flinders-ranges-outback\/kanku-breakaways-conservation-park\">Breakaways Reserve<\/a> and Moon Plain before&nbsp;we head back to Coober Pedy via the dingo fence (the world\u2019s longest fence, 5300 km long).&nbsp;Overnight we stay in our underground accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DAY 8:<\/strong>After breakfast we head to Woomera and visit the opal mining town of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.andamooka.sa.au\/\">Andamooka.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After lunch we spend time exploring Woomera.This outback town was established in 1947 as a site for the launching of experimental rockets. Attractions include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com.au\/Attraction_Review-g612489-d5970321-Reviews-Woomera_Heritage_and_Visitor_Information_Centre-Woomera_South_Australia.html\">Woomera Heritage Centre<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com.au\/Attraction_Review-g612489-d11721454-Reviews-Woomera_Missile_Park-Woomera_South_Australia.html\">Missile Park<\/a> displaying examples of rockets, aircraft and weapons associated with the testing range. Tonight we stay at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.roxbydownsmotorinn.com.au\/\">Roxby Downs Motor Inn.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DAY&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>9:&nbsp;<\/strong>After breakfast we visit Andamooka for a tour of this \u201cincredible last frontier town\u201d.The opal is mined 3 to 10 metres down on the ancient sea bed of 1.8 million to 70 million years ago. From 24 separate fields, opalised shells, stones and dinosaur bones are still being brought to the surface. In the many showrooms in Andamooka we can see how wide the range of opal can be. We also see the sights of Roxby Downs with an optional tour of Olympic Dam Mine. Tonight we stay again at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.roxbydownsmotorinn.com.au\/\">Roxby Downs Motor Inn.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DAY&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>10<\/strong><strong>:&nbsp;<\/strong>We depart Roxby Downs at approximately 9:00am and begin our journey back to Adelaide. We follow the&nbsp;Stuart (Explorer) Highway&nbsp;south revisiting Port Augusta. Overnight we stay at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standpipe.com.au\/\">Standpipe Motel.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DAY&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>11<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong>&nbsp; Before departing Port Augusta we take the opportunity to explore the Flinders Ranges and Outback in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wadlata.sa.gov.au\/\">Wadlata Outback Centre\u2019s<\/a> Tunnel of Time<strong><em>.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&nbsp;then head back to Adelaide via the Clare Valley wine region. After lunch we visit some wineries before our journey back to Adelaide.
