3 Day Andamooka

Spend three days 4WD touring the Outback opal mining town of Andamooka. Visit Woomera, once the launch site for experimental rockets and learn about Aboriginal art and culture.

Day One

We depart Adelaide at 7:00 am for the opal mining town of Andamooka, travelling via Port Augusta. At Port Augusta we visit the Wadlata Outback Centre, where we learn about the origins of the Flinders Ranges, the Aboriginal Dreaming, European settlement, Explorers, and much more.

After morning tea we travel to Woomera, a town established in 1947 for launching experimental rockets but that is no longer in operation. We visit the Woomera Heritage Centre and Missile Park, which displays examples of rockets, aircraft and weapons associated with the testing range.

We stay at Andamooka or Roxby Downs

Day Two

After breakfast we visit Andamooka for a tour of the 'incredible last frontier town'. We learn how opal is mined 3 to 10 metres down on what was an ancient sea bed 1.8 million to 700 million years ago.

You then have the opportunity to see how wide the range of opal is in the many showrooms, or perhaps you would like to try "noodling" for your own opal. If time permits, we can take a tour to the shimmering white salt of Lake Torrens. There is also the option to see the sights of Roxby Downs with a tour of the Olympic Dam Mine.

We stay at Andamooka or Roxby Downs

Day Three

We depart Roxby Downs for Marree, travelling via the Borefield Road. You will see the Dingo Fence and the Oodnadatta Track along the way, and visit the Farina Ruins, first surveyed in 1878.

After morning tea we head to Lyndhurst via the spectacular red and brown Ochre Cliffs. After lunch we travel through the magnificent Flinders Ranges to Port Augusta on the way back to Adelaide, where we arrive at approximately 6:00 pm.
